Meet Your Local Business: Fairview Pharmacy

Things that make you go hmmm....Pharmacy

• Louisiana is the first state to require that a pharmacist be licensed. This took place in 1806.

• It is illegal for pharmacists to accept incentives to distribute a particular drug. In fact, any licensed pharmacist who does accept bribes or incentives will face jail time and hefty fines.

• In Texas, no one other than a registered pharmacist may sell condoms, or other kinds of contraceptives.

During the Black Plague, doctors wore amulets (charms) made of dried blood and ground up toads!

During World War II, Britain feared that the Germans would invade their country and consequently, get a hold of their penicillin. As a preventative measure, researchers smeared pocket linings with the penicillin mold to transport to the U.S.

Fairview Pharmacy Prior Lake

4151 Willowwood St SE
Prior Lake, MN 55372
(952) 447-9570

When the Fairview physicians and practitioners in Prior Lake recognized the value in having a nearby pharmacy available, the concept of a Fairview Pharmacy on site became a reality.  The pharmacy, located at 4151 Willowwood Street is one of the 32 Fairview pharmacies located across the metro area.  The pharmacy is part of a nationally recognized health system, but managed with a small town, local feel.

In June of 2011, the pharmacy opened and Amy Hagbom, Pharm.D, RPh, assumed the duties of pharmacy manager.  It’s hard to imagine anyone bringing a more suitable background to the job.  Amy grew up in a family of pharmacists.  Her dad owned and operated a pharmacy in Spring Valley, MN.  Her sister, uncle and brother in law are all pharmacists.

It wasn’t hard to see this career choice for her.  Amy tells the story of being home from pharmacy school when a patient called her parent’s home because the pharmacy was closed.  She answered the phone, listened to the patient and managed to find a way to help answer their question.  It was that involvement and the feeling of contribution that confirmed that pharmacy was the correct profession.

Fairview Pharmacy truly has a community feel to it, a genuine Prior Lake connection.  Michelle Dawald, RPh is also behind the counter.  In addition to her own wealth of pharmaceutical knowledge, she brings a genuine hometown touch to her job having worked at Snyders Pharmacy in Prior Lake before it closed.

Fairview Pharmacy services all insurance plans including Medicare.  Their focus is broad covering pediatrics, geriatrics, and virtually all-medical patients.  They provide many services to their patients such as vaccinations and blood pressure checks.

It’s also important to note that the pharmacy integrates many of their valuable services with high profile partners such as Village Market where flu shot clinics as well as collaboration for occasional blood pressure checks have been offered.  Amy points to active partnerships with the Prior Lake Chamber of Commerce and participation in Community Fest Days.  “It’s important for us to be active in the community,” she said.  “It’s everything when you can feel a real connection to the people you serve.”

There’s so much to Fairview Pharmacy’s story.  Add in the convenience of the drive up pharmacy, the fact that you don’t need to be a Fairview patient to use the pharmacy and their convenient refill options using phone, Internet or the mobile app.  Amy added that even special orders can be ready within one day.

There’s nothing better for a community than when a pharmacy has a close working relationship with its local doctors and practitioners.  This is small town intimacy with large-scale efficiency and professionalism.
