Nearing the ripe young age of 70, Sam Dalal is the new face of baby boomer productivity. “Retirement is a concept that is fading away”, he says. “A generation ago people often had to retire at 63. Many of them worked extremely hard and their bodies were worn out. Today’s landscape is quite different. We live much longer and in much better health. Why should we stop?” Speaking energetically behind his desk at his State Farm agency in Prior Lake, it’s easy to feel the passion he carries for his work.
Sam began in insurance in 1977 and in 1983 opened his own agency with State Farm just doors down from where is he is today at 14033 Commerce Ave NE in Prior Lake. He still remembers the first policy he ever sold. “It was the very first day in the office and a guy who owned a trucking company purchased house insurance from us”, he recalled. As it turns out, it seemed a fortuitous beginning.
There are many who probably aren’t aware that State Farm is the largest insurance company in the United States. It’s a mutual company and one that offers a large variety of products and services. In fact, State Farm is ranked 44th in the 2013 Fortune 500, which lists American companies by revenue. State Farm has expanded into the financial services arena, such as banking and mutual funds. The bank opened in May 1999 and is operated by State Farm Financial Services, FSB, and a subsidiary of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. These are separate from its insurance products. State Farm Bank does not have branch offices. Its regular banking services, which include checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and money market accounts, are available to consumers countrywide via the Internet or over the phone, and through agents in Arizona, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, or New Mexico. Home mortgages are available countrywide over the phone or through agents in those five states.
Sam has an interesting life away from the office as well. He and his wife, Lynn, have two daughters and one granddaughter. He’s certified EMT and devotes twenty to twenty five hours a month volunteering for such organizations as the Red Cross and Rotary Club. “I’m a firm believer in productivity and giving back. It’s a large part of what gives us value as people”, he said.
Dalal is an inspiration and one leading by example.
