Mary Blanshan is as familiar with the hair care industry as anyone in the country. The net result of her talents, years of experience and passion for owning her own business, is the quaint shop in downtown Prior Lake, Mary’s on Main Salon and Spa.

Her salon and spa is a direct manifestation of her personal journey.  She grew up in the industry.  Her mom owned a salon as well, so she learned many of her skills at an early age.  A native of Richfield,  Mary graduated with her Cosmetologist license from Horst Training Center. She went on for advanced training in London, England. Mary continued to pursue her passion for hair while raising her 3 sons; eventually relocating to Prior Lake in 2000.

She projects a great deal of courage and resonance when she speaks.  A four-year breast cancer survivor, she says,  “As a survivor I became much more aware of my environment. I became conscious of the chemicals in the environment and what we put into and on our bodies.”  It was while recovering that she acquired an allergy to hair dye.  It was this sudden allergy to the dye coupled with her bout with breast cancer that set her on a quest to find a natural alternative.  What she discovered were a few amazing product lines; All completely safe and free from harmful chemicals, allowing her to stay in the industry that she loves.  The bonus, she says, "is that she can help so many others that have sensitivities or simply want a healthier lifestyle"!

Word got out quickly that Mary’s on Main was ahead of the curve and she found a great consumer demand for natural products.  Her customer base grew and the space she opened back in 2003 at 16154 Main Avenue became too small requiring her to move to the other end of the building where more room could be found.  Two years ago she expanded into Mary’s on Main Salon and Spa current facility, suite 110A.

The expanded clientele required adding more employees and fortunately she was able to find like-minded stylists who shared her vision and preference for natural products.  With the expansion of staff & space Mary was also able to bring new services to the clientele.  Waxing, skin care, massage and nail services were added to further promote her ideals of a healthier lifestyle.  It fell together nicely.  “Everything we use in here is of an all natural base,” she added.  “We’re a service industry.  We want to take care of people.”

The preference for things natural extends beyond her business as well.  She and her husband share a home with three dogs and a cat.  And, as an added bonus, her husband is a vegetarian who loves to cook. Together they enjoy living a healthy lifestyle with lots of fun and laughter.
