Meet Your Local Business: Julius Law Offices

Things that make you go hmmm.... Early Lawyers

During the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire, jurisconsults and advocates were unregulated, since the former were amateurs and the latter were technically illegal. Any citizen could call himself an advocate or a legal expert, though whether people believed him would depend upon his personal reputation. This changed once Claudius legalized the legal profession. By the start of the Byzantine Empire, the legal profession had become well-established, heavily regulated, and highly stratified.

The myth that a law office or its attorneys don’t have a heart is dispelled immediately upon meeting Rachel Julius, Operations Manager for Julius Law Offices at 14093 Commerce Ave in Prior Lake.  What is apparent right away is that this a very family-oriented office environment, with a number of their own family members employed at the firm.  Rachel is the daughter-in-law of owner Debra Julius.  Her introduction to me set the tone for the genuinely caring philosophy that guides this entire family law practice.

It’s said that family law is best understood and practiced by attorneys with families.  Julius Law Offices fits that bill perfectly.  Rachel has been in the Twin Cities since 1995, has two children and loves Zumba and weight training.  She’s on board with the notion that a passion for working out makes handling a career and two kids a lot easier.

Debra Julius sits at the head of the 20-year-old firm.  When asked about her passions outside of the law, the quick answer with a broad smile is horses and grandchildren, perhaps not always in that order.  She has 11 grandchildren and 5 horses.  Taking the horses out to the Black Hills and spending time in the country with the kids helps provide the perfect balance to the demands of a practice with three lawyers handling family law, estate planning, wills and probate.

Julius Law Office is that unique blend of law and heart.  Debra will tell you that everyone in the firm has at some time been in some of the same shoes as their clients.  They have experienced first hand the emotions that accompany family law.  It makes empathy possible and it also makes for the kind of client/attorney relationships that help make complex family legal issues less stressful.

There’s also an emphasis in the firm on pro bono work.  One can sense that they are committed to making pro bono work an integral part of their professional culture.  It fits the vibe at the firm.  When they talked with me about touching and changing the lives of others, the commitment to pro bono work really merges seamlessly with how they practice family law.

Julius Law Office brings a complete range of Minnesota family law services including representation in divorce, child custody and high-asset cases. They strongly view family law mediation as an alternative to formal litigation and the firm is proud to provide additional representation in estate planning, business law and contract law.  They are a superb example of legal professionals with real heart.
