Meet Your Local Business: Metro Cabinets

Things that make you go hmmm.... Kitchens
  •
  • Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, the Hoosier cabinet was a huge step forward for homemakers and the first move toward “fitted kitchens.” Not only did it bring commonly used tools into one cabinet, it included containers and a table surface of porcelain enamel steel — much easier to keep food fresh and clean. 2 million Hoosier cabinets were in action by 1920.
  • In the first half of the 20th century, efficiency experts promoted small, step-saving kitchens. But as domestic servants left for factory jobs and mom moved definitively into the kitchen nearly fulltime, the kitchen got bigger. This reflected her desire for a pleasant work space and the fact that everyone wanted to gather there.
  • By 1940 only a third of farm households were electrified.
  • As late as 1945, three out of five farm households did not have a sink with a drain, and any water carried in had to be carried out.

Some people seem to have been born with certain talents and skills.  Tim Sinnen of Metro Cabinets in Prior Lake seems to fit into that category.  He grew up watching his grandfather, a master craftsman, working in his own shop and creating some of the most innovative he’s ever seen.  Tim viewed his grandfather and his craftsmanship as singular and inspiring.  So, a family owned business making custom cabinets was probably the one destiny he couldn’t have avoided.

Metro Cabinets at 5418 Cottonwood Lane is your quintessential family owned business.  Tim handles many of the business aspects including sales and customer relations while his wife, Julie, handles the bookkeeping and Ron Stutzka oversees much of the production in the shop.  Together they have assembled one of the most efficient, creative custom cabinet businesses in the Midwest.

It’s a small company where customers are dealing directly with the owners.  They meet with their customers, spend time with them and insist on completely understanding their vision and subsequently communicating to them how they intend to realize it.

Kitchens, mantles, bars, entertainment centers all fall within the expertise they offer.  Spending time with Tim at Metro Cabinets afforded me the opportunity to see firsthand what products from Cambria, Wilsonart and Corian might actually look like if chosen for my project.

It was their kitchen work that most inspired me.  The kitchen, after all, is where the family seems to spend much of its time together.  Having one’s dream kitchen for everyone to huddle around and prepare meals, plan, reminisce and even watch football is truly living with style.  Rather than trying to limit choices with a restricted product offering, with Metro Cabinet’s blend of modern and handcrafted production they have made it possible to offer multiple options for every custom cabinet available saying, “yes” to virtually every request. Metro’s unmatched menu of custom options makes it easy to personalize a design to your tastes while keeping your budget in check.

Tim estimates that in 2013 they will do twenty new construction homes.  If you’re planning on building soon, make plans to sit down with him soon.  That first meeting with him will help create a reference point for your cabinet design.  Depending on when in the building process you make your appointment you can plan to have cabinetry built-in throughout your entire house: bathrooms, kitchen, entertainment center, office, garage, outdoor kitchen, library, home theater, dining room, and any other areas you may want fine woodwork or paneling.

Tim can be reached at 952-447-7722.
