The abbreviation CATV is often used for cable television. It originally stood for Community Access Television or Community Antenna Television, from cable television's origins in 1948: in areas where over-the-air reception was limited by distance from transmitters or mountainous terrain, large "community antennas" were constructed, and cable was run from them to individual homes.  If one wants to know all about Cable TV, it helps to know a “cable guy”.  It helps even more if that “cable guy” is from Mediacom.  Because in Prior Lake, Mediacom is the go-to cable TV company and their go-to guy here is one very knowledgeable, Bill Jensen.

Bill and his wife, Cathie, were long time Prior Lake residents before moving to Lakeville recently.  In fact, when talking with him, he still expresses a certain a fondness for Fongs and Village Market.

There probably aren’t a lot of people who go back to Cable TV’s earliest days still working in the industry.  That’s why it’s so refreshing to talk Cable with him.  He’s a wealth of information.  For most of us, the early days were MTV, CNN and Home Shopping Network.  One of his favorite stories is recalling the fear that many retailers had when HSN first went on the air.  The thought by a few was that it would somehow replace or supplant the brick and mortar experience.

Mediacom serves over 1,500 communities throughout the country. While most of their coverage is in America's smaller cities and towns, the company firmly believes that their customers deserve the same level of digital services that consumers are used to in large metropolitan areas. It’s interesting to learn that they have invested millions of dollars to construct a nationwide fiber optic infrastructure to deliver a wide array of advanced products and services including digital cable TV, high-speed Internet and phone service.

Moreover, Jensen speaks to the corporate focus of keeping jobs in the communities they serve. He talks about a diversified workforce of over 4,400 employees that live and work in the 22 states where they do business.

Jensen has seen a great deal of growth in his industry.  There is the evolution of pay-per-view to video on demand to cable TV content being readily available all the way to on the go via their mobile app.  Mediacom and its numerous products are clearly at the forefront of content delivery.  “I can’t tell you how pleased and honored we are to be a part of the Prior Lake community”, he says.
